There’s a certain pattern to Belle’s dreary days. She yearns to break free of her boring life, but there’s one part she secretly hopes never changes. At sunset, she has dinner almost ready. There’s only a few more minutes to spare before she’ll be coaxing and fighting her father away from his inventions and to their small dinner table, but it’s enough time for her to tread quietly to the very edge of their little home.

For just a moment, she stands at the edge between the life she’s always known and the unknown that calls her. She closes her eyes. She feels the breeze running through her hair. She frees her feet from her shoes and feels the grass beneath her bare feet.

And then she looks down, down, down to the water’s edge where the most remarkable creature has surfaced. The beauty strains with all her might to catch the last rays of the sun, and a hunger stirs in Belle as she watches the way the sunbeams kiss her skin and scales.

It stirs, and she aches to answer. She wants to run down the hill and reveal herself to the mermaid, but she knows if the awe-inspiring being ever becomes aware of her existence, she’ll flee. It will be the last time Belle ever sees her and the end of this secret adventure of hers. Belle waits until the mermaid splashes back into her home; then she hurries back to hers before the bread can burn.

“What?” Esmeralda asks in surprise as Jasmine plucks back the coin she’s just handed to an old woman. “I thought you wanted to know your fortune.”

“I did.”

“And you wanted to be sure,” Esmeralda's voice drops to a whisper, “it didn’t include simply being your father’s pretty, little doll to marry off to the highest bidder and was a life of your own choosing full of adventure and freedom.”

“I did.” Her fingers slip along Esmeralda's waist as she returns the coin.

Jasmine puts an apple in the old woman’s still out-stretched hand before grabbing Esmeralda's hand and pulling her away. “I did want to know all that,” she admits once they are alone again, her hands moving up to Esmeralda's beautiful, dark face, “but I already know my fortune.”

“You do, do you?”

“Oh, yeah.” Jasmine grins. She cups her face in her hands and meets her gaze. “I’m rich, far richer than any Princess still clinging to her Sultan father would be.”

“Oh?”

“And the jewel I hold is far better than any that can be traded by men for money or fame.”

“Is it?”

“You know it is,” Jasmine insists and, dropping all pretenses, kisses her long and deep. The wealth she has could never have been hers while she stayed at her father’s palace and is indeed a jewel far richer and more beautiful than any man will ever know. It’s her Esme, and she wouldn’t trade her for everything, or anything, in the world.

She has traveled across the world to claim her destiny. She has bested men far older, far more experienced, and far stronger than she, as a woman, will ever be. She has fought her way through armies and across lands, both known and unknown, to come here to this castle under the water.

Now she holds her head up high, ready to demand what is rightfully hers. The Sea King was a fool to ever make such an offer to man, but when Mulan heard of the tale and learned her father was about to set out to make their family rich and famous, her heart was rended. She’s fought all this way for more than her father, for more than her family, for more than herself even.

She’s endured all she has, because no woman should be forced by a man to take any mate not of her choosing. “I have come,” she announces, “for the Princess.”

The mermaid who went against her father’s wishes to join the land above struggles against her bonds. “I will never love you!”

The first thing anyone sees as Mulan lifts her helmet is a confident smile. “I never asked you to,” she says, shaking her hair out and looking at the redheaded mermaid. “If your father is a man of his word, you are now free.” She turns to walk away; after only a moment, as her bonds are snapped open, Ariel follows. Perhaps her destiny isn’t with a Prince after all.

“Are you sure you don’t want to move back here?” Dorothy asks softly. Even the creaking of the rocking chair beneath her seems to be quiet as they sit together in perfect peace, simply watching the lush, green land roll out before them.

Blanche looks around them with a fond smile. “Ah do have many, many memories here, Dorothy, an’ Ah’m so thankful Big Daddy left it to me instead o’ to that brother o’ his, but . . . “

“But?” Dorothy asks in surprise, her grey eyebrows arching.

“But I could never leave you girls.”

The thought that they could move here to this peaceful paradise is on the tip of Dorothy’s tongue, though it’s also something she’d never thought before coming this last time she would be willing to consider, even possibly want. Blanche leans over and grasps her hand. “Besides, it would ruin our perfect vacation spot.”

“Vacation spot?”

“Sure.” Blanche beams at her. “Where else can two beautiful woman luxuriate alone together in peace, quiet, and harmony and not have a single man judge them?”

Dorothy stares at her for a long minute. She rocks back, shattering the silence.

“What? You know Ah have to keep a cover in Miami -- “

Dorothy shakes her head. “It’s not that.”

“Then what?”

“I believe that’s the first time you’ve ever called me beautiful.”

Blanche smiles, and almost blushes. She pulls them both to their feet and embraces her. “Well, you are,” she whispers against her lips and then kisses her in paradise.

She watches her when the whole world doesn’t know she’s looking. If someone does catch her staring at her, they’ll think she’s glaring at her with hatred or scheming on how she can get Harvey away from her, as though that doofus would ever be enough to keep a woman like herself interested.

Sabrina is an entirely different story. The girl shows up at the oddest times. At first, it was infuriating, but now, Libby almost looks forward to the moments when Sabrina will do her best to make her look bad, as if anyone ever could.

She’ll always win between them, but sometimes she wonders what could happen if they could both win. What if, for just once, she could stop impressing people? What if she could let Sabrina know she impresses her, that she recognizes she has the courage of a lion and the pluckiness like . . . Like nobody else.

That’s what truly makes Libby admire her the most: The girl never backs down. She takes everything Libby throws at her and still comes back. She never stops; sometimes, she actually comes close to making Libby look bad. It’s almost like magic.

Libby knows better than to believe in magic. Magic doesn’t exist any more than good girls being successful or a quiet, obedient daughter earning her parents’ attention. If you want to win in this world, you have to grab what you want. It’s too bad she can’t grab Sabrina; then they both might see some real magic.
