She sees the emotions blasting in her beautiful eyes as she takes the fatal blow. She doesn't hear her cries for her. She watches, in horror, as she falls, and she wonders, as she races after her, if it could have been any different.
Had she acted differently, would she have saved her? Could she have saved her? If she'd simply told her she loved her, would it have made any difference? If she'd accepted her, truly accepted her, held her in her arms before her friends, told them of their actions in secret, of their love, would that have changed anything? Could she have saved her?
Buffy continues to look toward where she last saw Faith even after she can no longer see the truck in which she drew her last breath, wondering about her decision, fearing she reacted wrong, and yearning for her own actions to have been different. She watches until she knows she must go, but even after she turns away, she knows, a part of her will always be watching. She'll always be looking over her shoulder for Faith and always wondering if one decision, made differently, could have saved her life and her love.
