They stare into eyes into which they’ve been gazing off and on since they were far too young to understand what was truly forming between them. “You’ve always been here for me.”
“You’ve always been here for me too, Dej, even when nobody else was. I’m not an idiot. I know people don’t like me. My own family doesn’t like me!”
“Kimmy -- “
“You know it’s true. Even your father barely tolerates me, and he likes everybody!”
DJ sighs but doesn’t continue trying to deny. Kimmy’s right: For as long as they’ve known each other, which is almost their whole lives, she’s been the only one to ever really like Kimmy, except for the occasional guy. Guys have come into their lives and gone from them over the years. For DJ, her family and Kimmy have been the only steady things, but Kimmy’s only ever really had her. DJ’s smile turns a tad tremulous as Kimmy shakes her head.
“But you know what? That’s okay,” she says, “because I don’t need anybody else. All I really need is you. My earliest memories are of you hugging me, reassuring me, making me smile, making me laugh when all I wanted to do is cry, and all I want to do now, Dej, is to give you the same.” She won’t say the M word, because she knows she’s not ready. “I want to spend my life making you happy.”
Tears sparkle in DJ’s eyes. “You already do,” she answers and kisses her.
